Spring Break in a quiet Texas town
Somewhat different post today, but I wanted to share a few snapshots from a weekend trip. One of the perks of homeschooling is the flexibility to travel when the timing feels right—no need to squeeze in trips during peak seasons. But when a dear friend invited us to spend a weekend in Surfside, Texas over Spring Break, we couldn’t resist the opportunity!
Located just an hour south of Houston, Surfside Beach is a quiet fishing and surf community that feels like a step back in time. It’s far removed from the hustle of crowded tourist spots, making it the perfect place to relax and soak up the slower pace of coastal life. I spent time watching fishermen patiently waiting by their poles, families laughing in the waves, and even witnessed a peaceful Sunday morning church service right on the beach.
One of the highlights of our trip was watching my teen daughters learn to surf, thanks to my friend’s patient instruction. Seeing their determination and joy as they caught wave after wave was such a fun memory to capture!
What I didn’t expect was how fascinating it would be to watch the large cargo ships coming into port. Surfside sits near the mouth of the Brazos River and is part of the shipping channel that leads to Freeport, a busy port for international trade. Massive ships drifted by, guided carefully by powerful tugboats pulling them in and out of the harbor. If you’re into anything naval, maritime, or just love the sight of big ships, this is a unique treat to witness.
My son, is an early riser—something that hasn’t changed even on vacation. While many of the other guests were still fast asleep, he and I took advantage of the quiet mornings. We’d slip out before breakfast and walk a few peaceful miles along the shore. The cool sand beneath our feet, the rhythmic sound of the waves, and the solitude of the early morning light made for the most serene start to our days.
If you’re looking for a low-key beach destination where you can unwind, watch the sunrise with your kids, and maybe even catch a few waves—Surfside, Texas, should be on your list. And if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of a morning as peaceful as the one I shared with my son.
